Building a hospital
is a family business: The Partners
The Outer Banks Hospital
is the natural result of many years of growing healthcare needs and represents
the culmination of many professional relationships. In November 1998,
the state of North Carolina awarded Chesapeake Health, anchored by Chesapeake
General Hospital, and University
Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, which includes Pitt County Memorial
Hospital, a Certificate of Need. This allowed them to build the first
hospital on the Outer Banks.
The cooperative efforts
of these two organizations are testimony to the level of commitment they
share for Dare County and surrounding areas. Chesapeake General Hospital
operated the Outer Banks Medical Center for 14 years, which merged with
a University Health Systems facility to become HealthEast Outer Banks
Medical Center in Nags Head three years ago. The center provided both
primary and emergency care services, and was the only 24-hour medical
care facility in the area. Chesapeake General Hospital also offers specialty
care at the Chesapeake Health Medical Office in Kitty Hawk.
In addition to HealthEast
Outer Banks Medical Center in Nags Head, University Health Systems operates
HealthEast Family Care practices in Hatteras and Avon and are the only
primary care facilities in southern Dare County. They also partnered with
Dare County to operate a new dialysis facility in Manteo.
While the opening
of The Outer Banks Hospital marked the beginning of a new day in healthcare
for Dare County, we're proud to build on the tradition of excellence that
already exists here.

What
types of training does the ER staff have?
All physicians are
board certified in emergency medicine. All nurses are life support certified
for both adults and children.
What
treatments are done in the ER that are not currently being done at the
local medical centers?
First, there are
more sophisticated lab tests. For example, we can quickly check cardiac
enzymes to see if a patient is having a heart attack and also check
protimes to check blood thinning capacity for heart patients, stroke
victims and chemotherapy patients. Also, we have ER observation rooms
to closely monitor patients for up to 24 hours. This is important for
patients with, for example, chest pain but who may not be having a heart
attack. They can be held for monitoring, testings, and evaluation instead
of automatically being admitted.
Is
there be a helipad?
Yes, there is a
helipad on the property. In case of serious emergencies or major trauma,
patients are stabilized at the hospital, then transported to another
hospital, which can best serve patients' needs.
What
happens if I have a medical emergency that is too serious to be treated
at The Outer Banks Hospital?
The Outer Banks
Hospital, Inc. has established transfer agreements with all hospitals
in Virginia and North Carolina that were already being used when patients
were transferred out of the area.
Do
I have a choice of where I am transferred?
In the majority
of cases you may choose the hospital. However, in emergency situations,
you must rely on the emergency trained physicians at The Outer Banks
Hospital to recommend the hospital that can best treat you. It may be
a children's hospital, a hospital with a trauma center, a facility with
a cardiac center, etc. These decisions are made in the patient's best
interest.
