In an effort to provide the latest treatment for patients, The Outer Banks Hospital has acquired the use of a holmium laser device for outpatient procedures.

Lasers are used in medicine for many different treatments. Holmium lasers are commonly used for kidney stones. This minimally-invasive treatment usually requires general anesthesia and patients are seen on an out-patient basis.

During the procedure, the doctor inserts a small tube into the body, via the urinary tract to get close to the stone. A small fiber placed in the tube emits carefully guided laser energy that break stones into increasingly smaller pieces the body can naturally flush out. Larger pieces are retrieved with a basket. The surrounding tissue is left unaffected.

Since urologist Dr. David Lustig arrival in July 2010, the hospital has expanded the types of procedures available. The hospital acquired the use of a holmium laser in January.

According to Lustig, “The Outer Banks Hospital now has the tools to treat urology patients right here.” Lustig is certified in many urological procedures including: microwave therapy, indigo laser ablation, medstone lithotripsy, urodynamics, and high intensity focused ultrasound.

Prior to moving to the Outer Banks, Dr. Lustig was chairman of the laser committee at Bayside Hospital in Virginia Beach and a member of the board of directors for the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Virginia Beach General Hospital. He is on the medical executive committee of Bon Secours Surgery Center in Virginia Beach and was past-president of the Chesapeake Medical Society.
