NAGS HEAD, N.C.—Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, you need to know what you are up against, what your options are and where to go for help. If you smoke, think about attending one of the American Cancer Society’s Freshstart® smoking cessation classes offered by The Outer Banks Hospital’s Cancer Resource Center. All classes are offered free of charge and the public is invited to attend. Advanced registration is required by calling the Cancer Resource Center at 252.449.7350.

By completing the program, participants will be helped to quit smoking as soon as possible with the use of effective methods and activities. Participants will also learn techniques to help end their physical and psychological addition to nicotine. Quitting smoking will also decrease the participants risk of developing smoking-related diseases—emphysema, heart disease and lung and other cancers—to which the American Cancer Society states that after five years, “the risk of cancer decreases by almost half.” “People who quit smoking experience improved cardiovascular function, which means lower blood pressure and more energy. They also enjoy a renewed sense of taste and smell.”
