Lauren Diehl receives her employee of the month award for September

NAGS HEAD, N.C.—The phrase “life is an adventure” is one that has meant many different things to many different people throughout time. To some, maybe it has meant travel, to others, just the daily routine of activities. But for Lauren Diehl, a Respiratory Therapist at The Outer Banks Hospital, it is a combination of them both.

It was Diehl’s desire for travel and adventure that led here to the Outer Banks in the first place. “Seven years ago I started out on one of the best adventures of my life by doing travel assignments at various hospitals across the nation,” said Diehl. My travels took me to California, Florida, Virginia and North Carolina. I immediately fell in love with the Outer Banks—its beauty, surroundings and the friendliness of the people,” added Diehl. The hospital is now her permanent workplace. “The respect I have from my coworkers, nursing staff and doctors was a defining moment in my decision to stop traveling and accept a full time job.”

“Lauren demonstrates daily the standards of performance that we all aspire to,” said Debra Johnson, hospital Director of Diagnostic Services. “Those who work with Lauren know that she is a role model of the ‘ownership’ standard. The phrase ‘it’s not my job’ never enters her mind, as she is quick to lend a hand, doing whatever is necessary to assist her coworkers and provide the best possible care and service to our patients,” added Johnson. “She is a great asset to our facility.”

With a zest for life, Diehl always brings with her a positive attitude and commitment to her work, coworkers and patients. All of which led her to be selected as September’s Employee of the Month at The Outer Banks Hospital. But she also goes well beyond the duties of her job—often seen helping clean rooms, answering phones, helping the nursing staff with patients and doing anything else that is needed.

“Being selected as Employee of the Month was a definite surprise to me,” said Diehl. “Everyone I work with puts so much effort into trying to provide the highest quality of care for patients and The Outer Banks Hospital has provided me with a work environment that embodies the words ‘teamwork and respect.’ I am very appreciative and touched by the remarks I have received from my fellow employees and I am pleased to be surrounded by such wonderful and caring people at this facility,” noted Diehl.

Prior to living on the Outer Banks, Diehl resided in Colorado, where she both graduated from college and worked for several years. Diehl lives in Nags Head with her two dogs, Dakota and Bear, whom, according to Diehl, “seem to have adjusted well to life on the beach.” She’s even taken up photography since moving to the Outer Banks. “This place has a beauty of its own that is hard not to capture, which is one of the reasons I love living here,” said Diehl.
