Hospitalists are physicians who specifically care for patients admitted to the hospital. They are responsible for inpatient care from admission to discharge, while remaining in contact with the referring physician every step of the way.

Because hospitalists practice exclusively in the hospital, they can react more quickly to test results and are able to spend more time with patients. They can provide detailed reports of findings and treatment to primary care physicians. And because they are familiar with the latest technology and hospital procedures, they ensure that patients receive the most efficient and effective care possible.

The hospitalist model of health care delivery has been used in the United States for several years, but is a relatively new addition to the community hospitals in this part of the country. The Outer Banks Hospital employs three hospitalists; all are board certified.

Some benefits of The Outer Banks Hospital’s Hospitalist Team include:
  • Around the clock availability and improved responsiveness to the needs of the patient
  • Enhanced quality and consistency of overall hospital care
  • Shorter hospital stays and better control of hospital costs associated with care
  • Assistance during the discharge process by making arrangements for prescriptions and coordinating follow-up care with the primary care physician or a specialist

The Outer Banks Hospital is a full service hospital that’s open all day, every day, all year round. It’s also a hospital that offers a warm and caring environment designed especially to meet the health needs of our coastal community.

Services include inpatient care, labor and delivery, radiology, laboratory, physical-occupational-and speech therapies and both inpatient and outpatient surgery including orthopedic and minimally invasive surgery. Our state-of-the-art Emergency Department has 21 beds that provide 24-hour care. The Outer Banks Hospital is a partnership between University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and Chesapeake Health, which combines the experience and expertise of two major health systems to provide high quality health services to both residents and visitors.

The Outer Banks Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
