Dr. Van Martin recently joined Outer Banks General Surgery – Nags Head.

Dr. Van Martin attended Wayne State Medical School in Detroit, Michigan and completed his residency in General Surgery at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Martin first recalls wanting to become a surgeon at the age of four. He realized at a very young age that he wanted to use his hands to help people. What he enjoys most about being a surgeon is the immediate results gained from surgical procedures that make a big difference in the quality of life for his patients. Dr. Martin expects to do a wide variety of general surgery, including, breast biopsy, hernia repair, colonoscopy and colon resection, thyroid surgery, just to name a few.

“Surgeons are often seen as reserved, rushed and impersonal. Throughout my training, I have been intentional about taking time with patients, listening and showing kindness to both patients and fellow healthcare workers. I intend to continue this in my practice.” shared Dr. Martin.

Dr. Martin credits his family with instilling in him personal values of kindness, helping others and giving back to the community. He was raised by a single mom who never complained about working multiple jobs. Still, she found time to give back to her community by helping with estate sales and donating the proceeds to local charities.

“Part of the attraction to move to the Outer Banks was the giving and loving nature of the community,” Martin continued. “The Outer Banks is going to be a great place for my wife and me to raise our family and to be involved in the community.”

In addition to getting involved in the community, the Martin family plans to enjoy the outdoors. “Our family is very committed to wellness. The Outer Banks provides so many opportunities to get outdoors and live an active lifestyle. From surfing, to kiteboarding, to kayaking, we are ready to try it all.”
