Although Outer Banks Hospital officials anticipated a return visit from The Joint Commission as a result of acquiring the physician practice HealthEast of Nags Head, nobody guessed the surveyor would show up on a Friday. However employees stepped up to the plate and demonstrated why The Outer Banks Hospital has consistently been rated in the ninetieth percentile by their patients.

The surveyor examined files and quizzed those employed by HealthEast of Nags Head and then moved on to the hospital’s medical/surgical unit. By the end of the day, the results were in: zero recommendations for improvement. Or in laymen’s terms, A Gold Star.

“The Joint Commission evaluated and measured us against the same standards as other nationally renowned hospitals,” said Van Smith, hospital president. “I am extremely proud of our staff,” he added. “This is a tremendous accomplishment.”

The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 15,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States, applying the same standards to both nationally recognized health institutions and to small rural, community hospitals. The accreditation award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to complying with the Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards 24/7, 365 days a year.

“The surveyor left here knowing that this is a quality hospital with quality staff,” said Bob Middlebrooks, Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Directors. “The community should be proud that The Outer Banks Hospital is focusing on the most challenging goal – to continuously raise quality and safety to higher levels.”
