NAGS HEAD, N.C.—VHA Inc., a national healthcare network, has presented The Outer Banks Hospital with a VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence in Patient Experience, honoring the hospital for meeting or exceeding national performance standards for clinical care in specific areas. The Outer Banks Hospital was one of 38 VHA member organizations to receive the 2009 Leadership Awards for Clinical Excellence. Only six North Carolina based hospitals received the honor.

“We are honored to be recognized for our commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare services to our community,” said Van Smith, President of The Outer Banks Hospital. “This award distinguishes our hospital and solidifies our goal to continually exceed national performance standards in specific clinical activities,” added Smith.

The award recognizes the hospital for achieving high scores in all six of the patient satisfaction composite categories: doctor communications, nurse communications, responsiveness of hospitals staff, pain management, communications about medications and discharge instructions.

“VHA Leadership Award winners demonstrate that excellence can be achieved with the proper focus on quality, safety, and patient experience,” said Trent Haywood, M.D., J.D., Chief Medical Officer at VHA.
