The Outer Banks Hospital was one of seventeen sponsors of the annual F.C. Minton Charity Basketball Tournament. This year’s tournament was held on July 6-8 at the Youth Center in Kill Devil Hills. A total of 16 teams from across North Carolina competed in a double elimination basketball tournament to raise funds for the F.C. Minton Memorial Fund.

The F.C. Minton Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to local Dare County children so they are able to participate in Parks and Recreation activities. Since its inception in 2010, the F.C. Minton Charity Basketball Tournament affords many local children the opportunity to participate in numerous recreational programs thanks to the generosity of sponsors and participants.

The basketball tournament started on Friday, July 6th at 6 PM and continued on all day on Saturday. The tournament wrapped up on Sunday, July 8th with the “Music by Tommy” team from Manteo declared the winner. Second Place honors went to “EC Redeem Team” from Elizabeth City and the 3rd Place team was the “Boston Bail Bonding” team from Little Washington. Altogether, 16 Teams participated with players ranging in age from 17 to 60+.

In addition to the elimination tournament, a variety of competitions included a 3 point contest and a hot shot contest which was open to the public for a $5 registration fee. Dare County Parks and Recreation estimate that more than 300 spectators attended the 3-day tourney. A $1 admittance fee or canned good donation for the area food banks was charged to watch the high-energy games. Raffle tickets and trivia contests were also held during the tournament to raise money.

The F.C. Minton Charity Basketball Tournament raised almost $3,000 this year allowing numerous area children the opportunity to attend recreational programs. The Dare County Parks and Recreation programs include dance, basketball, soccer, softball, flag football, surf camps and more. These healthy, constructive programs keep our children occupied and active. In addition the Youth Center offers a safe place for middle and high school students to go after school.
