The board of directors of The Outer Banks Hospital were riding in style in Tucker Freeman’s 1949 Mercury as they launched the Development Council’s Get Pinked! campaign. The campaign raises funds to underwrite the costs of screening mammograms for men and women living in Dare County in financial need.
“Early detection can save lives,” said Carl Curnutte, co-chairman of the campaign with Linda Willey. “The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chances that treatment will work.” Last year, the Get Pinked! campaign raised more than $35,000. This year organizations are holding bake sales and yard sales, sponsoring blue jeans Fridays, selling pink hair extensions, pink piggy banks and sunglasses, and, in the case of The Willey Agency, “pinking Fletcher Willey.”
“We started the campaign in September, not even a month after Irene, and asked our community for the moon,” said Willey. “And the answer has been: how many stars do you want to go with that? What a privilege to live on the Outer Banks.”
To date the following businesses and organizations have signed on to be pink partners, each committing to raise $1,000: Atlantic Realty, Barefoot Bernie’s, Carolina Shores Vacation Rentals, Dare County Employees, First Bank, Gateway Bank, Gray’s Dept Store, Hairoics Salon & Spa, Miss Lizzies, OBX Bank, OBX Chevrolet, Outer Banks Blue Realty, Outer Banks Boot Camps, Outer Banks Running Club, Pigman’s Bar-B-Que, Quality Inn Carolina Oceanfront, RBC Bank, Silver Bonsai, Southern Bank & Trust Company, Sun Realty, The Outer Banks Hospital Board of Directors, The Outer Banks Hospital Employees, The Willey Agency, Toppers Pasta & Pizza, and Wachovia.
The campaign has pledged that 100% of the proceeds raised by the pink partners will underwrite the costs of screening mammograms. Monies from the raffle and the Get Pinked! party at Kelly’s Restaurant & Tavern on November 4th will offset any expenses.
“There are many ways to support Get Pinked!,” added Curnutte. “We are raffling a week at a fabulous vacation home in Duck, a Manteo getaway weekend and a piece of custom jewelry with tickets $5 each. Additionally, tickets to one of the best parties on the Outer Banks are $25 each for two or more.”
