Nags Head, N.C. – April 1, 2022 – The Outer Banks Hospital Development Council is pleased to announce that Southern Bank has made a multi-year commitment to help fund building the world-class Outpatient Cancer Center. The 15,000-square-foot state-of-the-art center will co-locate all of the hospital’s cancer services under one roof to provide compassionate, coordinated, and innovative cancer care to the Outer Banks community and surrounding regions.
“Southern Bank is honored to be an advocate for access to quality healthcare for everyone in the communities we serve,” said Jason Waughtel, Senior Vice President and Coastal Region Executive for the bank. “The support of the Southern Bank Foundation in this major healthcare initiative is a reflection of that advocacy, as well as its partnership with the Outer Banks Hospital Development Council.”
The 2019 Dare County Community Health Needs Assessment demonstrated that cancer is the leading cause of death in Dare County, a harsh reality for our small community. Since 2014, The Outer Banks Hospital has been focused on elevating cancer care services and is one of a small number of hospitals with 25 beds or less to have achieved an accredited cancer program through the Commission on Cancer. The goal with this new cancer center is to continue to improve the quality of life and experience for patients and caregivers who are facing the uncertainties that come with a cancer diagnosis.

The Outer Banks Hospital is a full service, community hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. A joint venture between Vidant Health and Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, the hospital is designed especially to meet the health needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of 35,000 swells to over 250,000 in the summer season. The Outer Banks Hospital has approval as a provider of Medicare and Medicaid programs, licensure by the Division of Facility Services, and accreditation by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the Commission on Cancer, the College of American Pathologists, and the American College of Radiology.
Founded in 1996, the Southern Bank Foundation makes charitable gifts and contributions in support of not-for-profit community groups and programs in areas served by Southern Bank and Trust Company. The bank has over 60 locations in eastern North Carolina and Virginia, including offices in Manteo, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk.
